Maternity Prep Guide

What to Expect

Timing? The best light of the day happens in the hour or so before sunset. This is when I prefer to do most of my outdoor sessions as it will give us the best results. Indoor sessions can take place any time of day.

How long? When you have kids, young or older, it can be a feat getting everyone there on time, happy, and dressed for the occasion. Typically, maternity sessions will last around 30-45 minutes depending on location and how many people are a part of the session.

Location? There are lots of different locations that we can use for your maternity session. When you book your session, I will send you a questionnaire so I can get to know your expectations and I will use that to put together a list of different options for you to choose from.

Pamper! This is your special day! You have spent the last few months growing a baby and that is hard on your mind and your body. Set this day aside to pamper yourself and give yourself an abundance of time to get ready and arrive for your session. The last thing you want is to be stressing out about making it on time. All that stress will show in your smile.

Relax! The most important thing to remember is to relax. Don’t let yourself stress out over too many details. This should be a sweet and memorable experience for you. You’re documenting one of the most amazing things you will ever do.

Wardrobe Tips + Tricks

Wardrobe is a big part of what makes great maternity photos! It can make your images striking and sophisticated or it can make them more casual and less formal if that is your preference.

When selecting your outfits here are a few things to keep in mind. Patterns are great but can sometimes be distracting in photos. Instead look for texture in your selections like a chunky knit sweater or a dress that has lace. Solids are great and you can pair them with a textured cardigan or wrap. Bold neon colors are usually not flattering so try to stick with solid pastels or lighter colors. White signifies innocence and purity but black is classic and flattering. If pairing your outfits with your significant other or other children stick with neutrals and maybe add a pop of color that matches your outfits. Do not match everyone perfectly instead opting to coordinate colors. Also, seamless underwear and an appropriately colored bra in the right style for your outfits will help you feel more comfortable as well as give you a better overall look in your final images.

Dress appropriately for the weather and be comfortable! This is another BIG one if we are outdoors. Those cute boots you bought your daughter may be beautiful but if she is uncomfortable during the session it will show! If you plan to wear heels in outdoor photos it’s also a good idea to bring along a pair of shoes you can slide on for comfort while we walk around.

Don’t be afraid to accessorize your outfits!

Hands will be in the photos so be sure to clean your nails and maybe lotion up just before the session. This applies to men as well.

Try not to overthink it and remember I am always happy to help! Remember that no matter what you choose you will be stunning momma!
